As we gather with loved ones for backyard barbecues, fireworks, birthday celebrations, and summer parties, it's also an opportunity to pause and reflect on the history and traditions that have shaped our communities and our country.

- Every Fourth of July, the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped (not rung) thirteen times in honor of the original thirteen colonies.

July marks the halfway point of the year—a perfect time to reflect on accomplishments, celebrate milestones, and look ahead to what's still possible.
For my family, July is especially meaningful. We begin the month by celebrating my mother's birthday on July 1st and remembering my father's birthday on July 31st. Family celebrations like these remind us that every gathering becomes part of our family's legacy.
Bastille Day – July 14
Before recently, I primarily knew Bastille as the band behind the song "Pompeii." But Bastille Day carries a fascinating history.
Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, a pivotal event that helped spark the French Revolution. Originally built in the 1300s to protect Paris during the Hundred Years' War, the Bastille eventually became a symbol of royal authority.
Today, Bastille Day—known in France as La Fête Nationale—is celebrated with fireworks, parades, festivals, and gatherings throughout the country.
Much like Independence Day in the United States, Bastille Day serves as a reminder of the importance of freedom, resilience, and national pride.

BUFFALO SOLDIERS DAY - July 28th
Have you heard of the Buffalo Soldiers?
Following the Civil War, Congress established the first peacetime all-Black regiments in the regular U.S. Army. The Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th and 10th Cavalry served on the American frontier, protecting settlers, guarding transportation routes, and helping shape the history of the American West.
Buffalo Soldiers Day, celebrated on July 28, commemorates the formation of these historic regiments in 1866 and honors the courage, perseverance, and contributions of African American soldiers.
This observance is especially meaningful to my family. In the photograph below, my father is pictured second from the left, reenacting as a Buffalo Soldier. His passion for preserving and sharing history reminds me of the importance of honoring the stories that came before us.
When we learn and share these stories, we ensure that future generations understand the sacrifices, achievements, and legacies that helped shape our nation.
