To Veil or not to Veil

To veil or not to veil, that is the question?  I think before you can answer that question you need to know the background behind the veil.

Dating back to Greek and Roman times, they were viewed as a sign of purity.  The Greeks wore bright yellow and the Romans wore translucent red with sparkles woven throughout.

In Medieval Europe, the Crusaders saw Muslims wearing veils and decided this was for purity.  A woman would wear a veil so her husband wouldn't be killed for her beauty.  This was also during the time of the arranged marriage and many times grooms wouldn't see their bride until the end of the wedding.  That way if the brides appearance was not to his liking, the arrangement or contract was still upheld.

Europe in the 1700's - hats were trimmed with lace.  Tulle was invented in the 1800's.

The groom's lifting of the veil signifies his acceptance of the bride. He unwraps his bride as he takes possession of her. Hence, a bride traditionally was given away while a man took a wife.

Veils have transformed from head coverings, protection from evil spirits, unveiling a brides purity to her new husband, fashion statements (long, short, bird cage, etc.).

So know that you now the background, do you veil or not veil.  It is a personal decision based on how traditional or trendy you are as a person.  Whatever you decide wear it with pride.
